Author Support Services

The worlds of book authors, publishers, marketers and readers have changed significantly in the past decade. Each of these separate but connected worlds has been ravaged by technological change, with the Internet leading the charge. Authors now find themselves in a vastly different situation: although it is more difficult than ever to get ‘published’ in any way remotely similar to the traditional route, they now have a previously unheard-of level of independence, and can draw economically on a wide range of editorial, design, communications, marketing, and publishing support services.

While the Internet and its associated technology indeed upended and transformed the publishing sector beyond recognition, it also delivered access to world markets to the individual author — independently of any large publishing organization. What was previously impossible for all but the very rich, is now easily available to the ordinary citizen with a story to tell.

Drawing on that support, authors can now publish well-written titles that appeal to their target audience without having to deal with the many frustrating challenges of traditional publishing. Civil Sector Press authors can choose from a variety of Support Service Packages that they can tailor to suit their particular needs and budget.

CSP Make-It-Happen Publishing Packages

The E-Book Package

Cover design and page assembly

We’ll consult with you, and then prepare a professional cover design and a basic layout/page assembly, with two rounds of revisions.

Basic Copy Editing

Basic copy editing at Civil Sector Press involves a light ‘line-by-line’ review of your work that addresses any mechanical errors in spelling, grammar, common usage, punctuation, jargon, homophone errors, use of the passive voice, repetition, basic syntax and facts. We’ll also review your work for overall clarity and sense on behalf of the prospective audience, look for apparent errors or inconsistencies, and note where permissions may be needed to publish copyrighted material. We’ll cross-check references, art, figures, tables, equations, and other features for consistency with their mentions in the text and will prepare your manuscript for the next stage of the publication process.

Formatting

We’ll prepare an e-publishing file converted and formatted for use on the Kindle and Kobo platforms.

Administration

We’ll make all arrangements and required registrations with Library and Archives Canada, PDF proofs as required, and an International Standard Book Number(ISBN).

Package Fee

$4,997.00 plus applicable tax.

Substantive Developmental Editing

In addition to basic copy editing as in the other packages, we will also work closely with you, looking at the organization, direction and strength of a book, generally prior to copy and line editing. We’ll read the entire book carefully, making thoughtful notes throughout. We consider everything from pacing to characters, point of view, tense, plot, subplots, and dialogue. We look for weak links, order, flow, and consistency. We examine chapters and paragraphing, gaps, pacing, repetition, characterization and dialogue — all the aspects that make a book interesting, entertaining and readable. Where necessary, we’ll move, delete, add, tighten, clarify or rewrite entire sentences, paragraphs, chapters, and sections of the manuscript.
